Is it dangerous to have a color-printer in the same room where you work?

Hey there,

You don't say what kind of printer or what size but here goes....

There have been a few reports of the dangers of printers.

Personally I don't this the risk is very high but there are two broad catergories of possible concern. If you have any serious concerns please talk to your company/health and safety staff/ the manufacturer etc...

1: Ozone

Can be produced in small quantities especially by laser printers. Modern printers produce far less than older one.

Make sure that the ventilation for your printer is adequate to minimise this.

I was working in an office a number of years ago where a HP Laserjet III was in operation. Staff had commented on dry eyes and sore throats. We investigated the printer and had air test done while the printer was in operation. The test device was unable to measure any ozone let alone indicate a level that could casue issues.

2: Toner contamination

The ink used in laser printing is called toner. In many cases it is more like a powdered plastic than an ink.

It should be washed off if it gets on your hands.

In general if you follow the instructions for using the printer correctly you should not have any problems. If you are not sure please contact the manufacturer.

There are some larger printers which will state the operating environment and installation space requirements.

I would have thought that lack proper ventilation is the main reason that people think working next to a printer might be bad for your health. If a printer is used for a long time it can dry the air out which can cause sore eyes.

Good luck and Happy printing......!Is it dangerous to have a color-printer in the same room where you work?
