Why can't I print in black ink just because I do not have a color cartridge in the printer?

When we moved we had to throw out the old cartridges. I bought a new black one, because I rarely use color, and set the options to print with black ink only. But now, it still won't let me. Im guessing because the color spot does not have a cartridge at all (empty or full). Can I do something to print just with black or do I HAVE to go buy a color cartridge. It's a Canon ip1700 if that helps. Why can't I print in black ink just because I do not have a color cartridge in the printer?
yes you do, you will need to have the cartridges in to make sure, the machines works. It suck I know. Why can't I print in black ink just because I do not have a color cartridge in the printer?
I can print text with an empty color cartridge on board but not if the color cartridge compartment has nothing in it at all
